In April 2016, The Royal Mint released a commemorative BU silver £20 coin to celebrate the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen is the first ever British monarch to reach this milestone and it comes shortly after she celebrated becoming Britain’s longest reigning monarch. Events such as street parties and a concert were held at The Mall, just outside Buckingham Palace. Her ‘official’ birthday is on the second Saturday in June, but her actual birthday is on the 21st April. Christopher Hobbs is responsible for the tradition design on the coin’s reverse, where he pays tribute to The Queen’s like of flowers by placing nine roses around her royal cypher, signifying the nine decades of her life. The reverse is complemented by Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty, which is the fifth portrait of The Queen to appear on UK coinage. Each coin comes presented in an informative slipcase, with a coloured photograph of Elizabeth II smiling. Specifications of the coin are a fine silver weight of just over half a troy ounce (15.69 grams) and a diameter of 27.00 millimetres. An excellent gift idea for any follower of the British Royal Family.
