Mauritania issued its first significant design upgrade of its 1000 Ouguiya in 2014 when it issued a polymer version (P19). It was an unusual decision as the lower denominations (100, 200, and 500) used a hybrid substrate and the higher denominations (2000 and 5000) used a paper substrate.
The banknote includes an oval window and a lightly printed image to mimic a watermark. Â It is blue-green and contains desert images and themes similar to the other denominations of the time.
