Firuz Shah Tughluq (r. 1351–1388), the Sultan of Delhi, issued billon coinage during his reign as part of the Tughluq dynasty. Billon coins, made of a low silver-content alloy mixed with copper, reflected the economic challenges of the time. Firuz Shah continued the Tughluq tradition of minting these coins, which typically featured Arabic inscriptions, including his titles and Islamic declarations. These coins helped maintain smaller denominations in circulation, supporting everyday commerce. Despite their debased silver content, Firuz Shah’s billon issues highlight efforts to stabilize the economy and ensure coin availability for common transactions amidst political and administrative reforms.
